Sallie, Civil War Canine Hero
Hello Friends,
One of the ways to tour the sight, is in your own car, with a GPS narrated tour. It tells you where to turn and recounts the story of The Battle of Gettysburg. It was a humbling and sobering experience to hear the story while driving around the battlefield. You could spend a lifetime learning about the stories and sacrifices made during this battle, let alone the entire civil war. Today I want to invite you to read a story about a truly amazing dog, named Sallie, and the Eleventh Pennsylvania Infantry. I do not want to cheapen the history or plagiarize someone else’s work. Rather please click the link the link below to read an article I found about this Canine Hero.

CritterDoc Corner - Aprill Sherman, DVM
We are pleased to showcase our first CritterDoc Corner. This will often include veterinary tips to help everyone with their furry family. However, to keep on track with our history theme today, here is some interesting history from Doc, about the veterinary profession.
Veterinary medicine dates back before 9000BC when rudimentary medical skills were used for livestock and also for the dogs that watched over the herds. In the United States, it was the need for veterinarians to care for four-legged warriors that stimulated growth of the profession. George Washington ordered each cavalry regiment to have an animal attendant for the horses during the Revolutionary War. The necessity for trained veterinarians during the Civil War stimulated the creation of formal veterinary schools. Today the US Army Veterinary Corp is a special branch of our military.
